Getting started
How old do I need to be to get a learner permit in New York?
You must be at least 16. You apply at a DMV office, pass a written knowledge test and a vision test, and pay the permit fee. Learner permit details from the DMV.
When can I start driving lessons?
As soon as you have your learner permit. Bring it to your first lesson.
Do I need the 5-hour course before my road test?
Most new drivers must complete the 5-hour pre-licensing course (MV-278) or a high school or college Driver Education course (MV-285) before scheduling a road test. We offer the 5-hour course every Saturday.
How much supervised practice do drivers under 18 need?
At least 50 hours of supervised driving, including 15 hours after sunset, certified by a parent or guardian on the MV-262 form. Hours driven with a driving school instructor can count toward the total.
How long do I need to hold my permit before the road test?
If you are under 18, you must wait at least six months from the date your learner permit was issued before you schedule your road test.
Lessons
How long is each lesson?
Lessons are 45 or 60 minutes, and every lesson is private and one-on-one with your instructor.
Do you offer pickup and drop-off?
Yes. We pick you up and drop you off at home, school, or work at no extra charge.
What languages are lessons offered in?
English, Spanish, Bengali, and more. Ask about availability when you book.
Are your cars equipped for student drivers?
Yes. Our cars are clean, dual-control vehicles with an instructor brake for added safety.
How many lessons will I need?
It depends on your experience. Our packages of 5, 7, and 10 lessons range from a focused starting package to our most comprehensive preparation, and your instructor can recommend the right fit.
The road test
How do I schedule my road test?
You can schedule online through the NYS DMV or by phone at 1-518-402-2100. You will need your learner permit, a valid MV-278 or MV-285 certificate, and at least one unused road test. Students who take our 5-hour course get their road test scheduled by us free of charge.
Can I practice at the road test site?
New York State does not allow practice driving at DMV road test sites. We prepare you on everyday Long Island roads, focusing on the skills examiners evaluate: parallel parking, three-point turns, lane changes, and smooth, confident control.
What do I need to bring on test day?
Your physical photo learner permit, your original MV-278 or MV-285, a completed MV-262 if you are under 18, any glasses or contacts your permit requires, and a properly registered, insured, and inspected vehicle with a qualifying accompanying driver. See our resources page for the full checklist.
What happens if I need to retake the road test?
Your learner permit stays valid until its expiration date. You must wait at least 14 days before testing again, and additional fees apply after your first two road tests.
Junior drivers on Long Island
What can a junior license holder do in Nassau and Suffolk?
Long Island has some of the most specific junior license rules in the state. In Nassau and Suffolk, junior drivers generally drive with a qualifying supervising driver, with limited exceptions for direct trips such as to work or school. Review the DMV Graduated License Law for the complete rules.
When do junior license restrictions end?
At 18, or at 17 for drivers who complete a state-approved Driver and Traffic Safety Education course and receive a Class D license. Junior drivers who do not upgrade remain subject to junior restrictions until 18.
